What's Hott? Hilary + Scott. We couldn't resist.

Scott and Hilary work at radio station WENN in Pittsburgh in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Hilary is an actress there (the actress, she'd say), while Scott started as the station manager and ended up as an actor. They are characters on Rupert Holmes's wonderful dramedy (or is that comma?), Remember WENN, which aired on cable channel AMC from 1996-1998.

We'll start with Miss Hilary Booth, of course. Hilary has had an illustrious career as a Broadway actress in such hits as Razzle Dazzle and The Rivals. It was while touring with Razzle Dazzle that she met (and married) Jeff Singer for the first time. Their Mexican wedding was quickly followed by a Mexican divorce, but they pretended to be married because their fans enjoyed the idea. When the tour ended in Pittsburgh, in approximately 1936, they joined radio station WENN. They worked and fought there for a number of years, driving everyone around them insane. In late 1940, Jeffrey flew to London to broadcast for the BBC and was injured during the Blitz. This caused Jeff and Hilary to realize that they did still love each other and they quickly married in Mexico once again. Unfortunately, Hilary learned in July 1941 that this marriage wasn't exactly legal. By then, though, she had Scott to lean on.

Scott Sherwood has a checkered past. He's done just about everything there is to do - some of it was probably even legal. He briefly met WENN station manager Victor Comstock in a London pub in 1940 and from there, forged Victor's signature on a letter of recommendation for him to replace Victor as the manager. His con worked for about a year - long enough to create a home for himself at WENN. Flat broke after being fired, he decided to take the acting job that opened up at WENN when Jeff decided to go back to London and the BBC. And it's a good thing he did, for Hilary's sake.

When Scott joined the staff of WENN, he was able to quickly size everyone up. He knew to disregard Celia the vamp immediately. He showed respect for Mr. Eldridge, the elderly man-of-a-thousand-jobs (if only anyone knew what they were) without hesitation. And most importantly, he recognized two of the women as being exactly who he wanted on his side: Betty Roberts, station writer, and Hilary Booth. From the start, he was attracted to both women. He admired their brains, their devious streaks, their skills and their looks. Unfortunately, Hilary wasn't responding to his charm - she would banter and challenge, but she was married to and in love with Jeff. Betty thawed at a faster rate and as such, they began to slowly pursue a relationship.

It wouldn't last long, though. Betty was the girl next door and her schemes couldn't hold a candle to Scott's. The end came when everyone learned that he lied his way into the job. It was something Betty just couldn't forgive. Their relationship was never the same, no matter how Scott tried to make it up to her.

Hilary understood his schemes, though. While they certainly butted heads over numerous topics, they also shared a grudging respect. From this grudging respect was born a friendship that lead to their marriage.
